Meteorite Explodes Over Russia

meteorThis morning, many Russians caught an astonishing site as a meteor passed over the town of Chelyabinsk just east of the Ural mountains. The resulting sonic boom shattered thousands of windows, left an estimated 500 people injured and thousands more shaken. What’s more, many people caught the entire thing on tape, watching in awe as the meteor graces the atmosphere during daylight hours, setting the sky on fire and then letting loose a massive thunderclap.

Although there were no confirmed deaths, the full extent of the damage has yet to be fully assessed. And while some believed that the lights were caused by a meteor shower, others believe that it was a single meteor that cut across the sky and exploded in the atmosphere. The explosive force shook the town’s buildings, and it seems as though the 6000-square-foot roof of a Zinc Plant collapsed. Some residents are even saying that fragments of the meteor rained down on the town.

And though there is no definite connection between this meteor strike and asteroid DA14, which passed Earth by today, it is notable that they happened within a day of each other. But just in case people are worried, now might be a good time to remind them that by all reliable accounts, DA14 is expected to miss Earth entirely. Good news for those of us planning on getting up tomorrow morning, alive and uncharred!

    1. Not that I know of. It’s appearance was quite surprising. I imagine they’ll need time to catch up and formalize their prophecy. And if I were them, I’d say that the conjunction of the meteor, the asteroid, and the retirement of Benedict XVI is a sign. DOOOOOOM!

      1. Well, I’m a heretical Catholic. The kind they would have burned at the stake back then. Maybe even now! Sorry. I’ll remember to be more discreet next time. Apologies.

      2. No, be heretical and sacrilegious please! Like I said, I’m recovering, which means it’s part of my family background that no one practices anymore. We are sure to pay our respects when it comes up, but otherwise, we’re all living in sin more or less. I must insist you be subversive and undermine organized religion wherever possible. I believe that’s an order πŸ˜‰

      1. no, he thought the meteor caused a nuclear explosion. i had to explain to him over facebook there was nothing to worry about.
and besides, big, flashy things like nuclear missiles are not my thing. i prefer giving osama bin laden’s address to the cia or showing the pope embarassing photos of himself when he was younger.

  1. Meteor shower – another misuse of language by the media. As we know a meteor shower is many meteoroids from the same radiant (ie associated with the same source) entering the Earth’s atmosphere in a given time frame and producing visible streaks. Although when a single large meteoroid such as the one over Russia explodes, the resulting falling debris is, for all intents and purposes, a meteor shower, strictly speaking is not the same thing. It’s like when the media mention a “mini tornado” it’s gets my back up.
